Ni hao, pungyo! That's Chinese for "Hello, friends!" Why am I greeting you in Chinese and bringing attention to it? You can probably infer that I'm going to say something about China! Oh, by the way, it's heartsstarssmiles!
In social studies, we're learning about about ancient China! China is amazing! I'm not biased by having friends from China! We're learning about the dynasties that rose and fell after the Period of Disunion. The Period of Disunion was a time of utter chaos, death, and destruction with no laws, rules, or leadership. You wouldn't know whether you would live or not once you stepped outside your house.
So, let's start with what a dynasty is. A dynasty is a royal family that rules for many generations. The Han Dynasty ruled for 300 years before they "crashed and burned," as my social studies teacher likes to say. Then came the Period of Disunion, which lasted 369 years long! Then followed the Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan (which was actually Mongolian!), and the Ming.
During the Tang Dynasty, ancient China had its first and only female leader: Empress Wu. Her husband died, followed by the disappearance of her two sons, both of whom she thought were unfit to rule. Some think that she killed them all. It is very suspicious, don't you think?
She then decided that she would rule. Many people were against it, so she did something very unexpected: she killed some of the people who were actually on her side! She then said to the disloyal people, "If I do that to the loyal people, imagine what I'll do to you." She walked off.
She was a vicious, ruthless woman who ruled with an iron fist. She didn't care if she had to hurt a few people to reach her goals. She ruled from the year 655 to the year 705. She was not liked by many, but she was respected for bringing stability and prosperity to China. What do you think of her?
Social studies rocks! =D
